Run Fest at Sprotborough

Simon Franks

Goole on wrong end of the runs, but a good batting performance give hope.

Goole U13s travelled to Sprotborough with an inexperienced team which consisted of 5 U11's. Sprotborough batted first and quickly got underway with the opening batsmen both retiring on 25 after 3 and 5 overs respectively. The carnage continued as Goole's bowlers fed the batsmen some juicy balls to dispatch to the boundary. One or two poor fielding positions cost Goole a number of runs. They will have to learn that going on the boundary is not a punishment it is designed to save the team runs. On a number of occasions the fielders were left chasing the ball to the boundary when more thought in positioning themselves would have given them an easy stop. Sprotborough continued to score and it wasn't until after drinks (and four retirements for 25 not out) that Alex Wood broke through with a ball that was caught behind by the wicket keeper, Josh Barnes. Ollie Chappell came on to bowl two good overs and took a wicket, clean bowling the Sprotborough number 6, but it was not enough to limit the scoring as Sprotborough finished their 20 overs on 178.

Goole in reply got on with the task as James Steele and Brad Gardiner raced along to 40 before Gardiner had to retire on 25. Josh Barnes continued where Gardiner had left off and he supported Steele on his way to 25, again retired. Barnes was joined by Clarke, who with a rush of blood lofted a short ball into the air to be caught for a golden duck, but that didn't dampen Goole's charge as Luke Stevens assisted Barnes in reaching his retirement again for 25. Goole were well placed on 90-1 after 12 overs, but they were still behind the rate and it proved too much for them in the end. Stevens batted well to score 15 before he was bowled and it was left to Thomas Franks (10 not out) and Ollie Chappell (12 not out) to finish the innings, but Goole were short of the target by 50 runs.

A good batting performance gave Goole some positives from the match, but they will have to improve in the field and with the ball to be able to compete with the better teams in the league.
