Under 9's Win

Simon Franks

Doncaster well beaten by Goole U9's at Westfield.

After last weeks disappointing defeat to Bawtry, the U9's took on Doncaster 'B' on a glorious Sunday morning at Westfield. Doncaster won the toss and elected to bowl.

Henry Appleby and William Herbert opened the batting and put on a respectable 19, with the loss of only one wicket for the opening pair. This solid start was built upon by the once again impressive Charlie Evans and young Toby Bailey. Great communication between the pair led to a flurry of quick singles, whilst Evans plundered a trio of boundaries, seeing the pair finish on 27 without loss.

Doncaster had been quick in the field restricting Goole in the main, to quick singles in the first half of their innings. More good fielding restricted Goole's third pairing of Jessie Wood and debutant Jack Pattison to 11, but the fact that they kept their innings wicketless added significantly to the greater cause.

The final pairing of skipper Jenson Clarke and Rafe Nutton entered the fray. Although Clarke lost his wicket early trying and audacious pull shot, he recovered well to put on a run fest with his partner Nutton, playing some very cheeky little shots but having the confidence in himself and his partner to run quick singles. Nutton made the Doncaster bowlers pay for some wayward bowling smashing four fours in his innings, seeing the final pair leave the field with 38 to their name with just the one lost wicket.

Goole finished their innings with an impressive and imposing total of 287 for the away side to chase, but knew they had to improve on last weeks fielding performance to make it count.

Captain Clarke opened the bowling, followed by Evans, which saw Goole concede only six runs. Already it was evident that Goole meant business in the field. There was a real spring in their step and they were on the ball in a flash and backing up their team mates who were constantly on the prowl for run out opportunites.

Next up was the ever improving Wood who claimed two wickets, followed by Herbert, Nutton and Bailey who each nicked a wicket. Debutant Pattison stepped up for his first over un U9's cricket and he bowled a good line which saw him go for only four runs.

The impressive Appleby bowled a maiden over which included two wickets to wrap up the first half of Doncaster's innings which saw seven wickets fall for only 30 runs (net two runs scored).

Goole could almost scent victory so early in the game and went for the jugular. Although Doncaster's third pair kept their wicket in tact for the duration of their innings, some superb Goole fielding, constantly being marshalled and encouraged by the vociferous Bailey, kept them down to only nine runs scored.

Doncaster's final and strongest pair came to the crease, knowing they had to take the game to Goole to get anywhere near Goole's score. This expansive approach to their innings meant they lost their wicket three times, putting a 12 run dent in their total of 28 runs scored.

Doncaster finished their innings on 227, some 60 runs shy of their 287 target. This was by far and away Goole's best performance of a stuttering season, leaving the coaches immensely proud to see how they had taken all their hard work from training and executed it so well during the game. Notable mentions go to Clarke, Evens, and Herbert who all took superb catches.

Player of the Match went to the outstanding Rafe Nutton who, along with his constant communication and encouragement to his team mates in the field, top scored with 26 without loss and finished with bowling figures of 8/2 as well as taking one brilliant catch.
