Losing the toss, Goole made a spectacularly poor start, with both openers Gibbins (returning from first team duty) and Cooper, both falling from innocuous deliveries on their respective first balls, Goole were teetering at 2 for 2. Captain Foster and the returning Will O’Donnell then began a fight back on a lively wicket. They negotiated the next few overs and began to dominate, at the first drinks break they had accelerated to 68 for 2, with O’Donnell being the aggressor hitting a lovely straight 6 amongst a number of fours. It didn’t last however, as Foster was done by turn and bounce and gloved to be caught at slip, Coulbeck was harshly adjudged lbw off his hip making 69-4 off just 17 overs.
A period of consolidation was required. This never came though and after ODonnell was caught in the deep fro a 59 ball 60, a number of batsmen were caught playing attacking shots, at least a couple on the boundary. Kennedy scored 16 and Aitchison 18 (against his old team) but after this Goole were unable to add another meaningful partnership. Although the wicket did have some demons, most of the batsmen caused their own demise, hopefully they will learn from this for the run in.
Goole finished on 123 all out with 12 overs left in the innings. Although below par, Goole were confident that, if they made early inroads they could definitely compete, which became the case.
Kennedy and Cooper both bowled well without making the break through early and it wasn’t until the 15th over that Kennedy bowled Cawood danger man Baxter for 22. Goole kept the scoring in check with youngster Marritt really unlucky not to pick up a wicket in a miserly spell 9 of overs that only went for 12 runs. They couldn’t make any further breakthrough until the score reach 60 when Aitchison trapped Toone LBW. Captain Foster then donned the gloves so that Gibbins could have a bowl and this decision almost turned the match. Picking up wickets regularly Gibbins (4 for 19) and Goole, with some really good catching, reduced Cawood to 91-6 and it was definitely game on.
James Pullien rode his luck however to see off a spell of quick Coulbeck’s bowling and take Cawood to a 3 wicket win in the 45 over.
Another 25 runs could have been all the difference in the Game where Town only picked up 4 points and were overtaken for top spot.
Next week the 2nds are at home versus 4th placed Heslington.
