Teenagers & Experience do the business for 2s v Copmanthorpe

Goole 2's took maximum points again this weekend after a minor scare against Ebor 3's bottom placed team.

Goole went into the game on a high after a good win against Castleford last Saturday, but they knew that they would need the same level of performance against Copmanthorpe, who were a very different side from the last time the two teams met. Goole won the toss and elected to field and after an early wicket from Ryan Thompson Cop put on 50 for the second wicket to reach 56-1. 13 year old Thomas Franks did the business again as was the case last week as he removed the dangerous Ricks with a lovely seaming delivery that took his off stumped to bowl him for 33 when his innings was just starting to look dangerous. Left armer and 15 year old Josh Tooke followed this up with two quick wickets to leave Cop struggling on 58-4, but with the experienced Atkinson and Sam Bibby together Cop still had a chance to post a decent score. Goole fought back after another 50 run partnership but the injured Aidan Coulbeck bowled an over of spin and bowled Bibby for 24 and Eddie Hasdell nipped in to have Atkinson caught at mid wicket by Thompson for 31 to leave Cop on 116-6. Goole were back in control and Neil Foster turned to Franks again, but this time with his legspin. Franks struck immediately to remove Hillyard who was caught by Tooke at square leg and then he removed Byers for nought with a spinning delivery that was well caught at gully by Coulbeck. Goole from then on controlled the innings, but could not force the final two wickets to fall and Cop ended their innings on 154-8, with Franks topping the bowling with 3-30 and Josh Tooke 2-29. A special note should be given to Jakey Kennedy who bowled 11 very tight overs for only 22 runs as he kept things quiet from one end as the other bowlers took the wickets. His control of swing and seam kept the Cop batsmen on their toes and on another occasion Kennedy could easily have picked up 3 or 4 wickets.

In reply Goole needed a good start, but with early wickets falling Goole found themselves behind the 'eight ball' at 35-3 and then 58-5. Simon Franks (11), Neil Foster (13), Eddie Hasdell (12) and jakey Kennedy (10) all got into double figures before being dismissed and Goole needed a partnership to get them anywhere near the Cop total. The experienced Steve Hicks and Aidan Coulbeck were the men for the job as they posted a partnership of 87 that was crucial to the outcome of the game. Cop had their chances in the innings of Hicks as they dropped him 3 times before he eventually reached 51 not out from 44 balls to win the game for Goole by 4 wickets. Coulbeck supported Hicks well with a well timed 36 and their partnership and experience, sprinkled with a bit of luck gave Goole all 30 points to stay 11 points clear of Castleford on second place.
