Goole’s Academy team secured their first home win against Hessle on Sunday, and only their second win of the season as the club’s young talent entertained again. Goole won the toss and elected to bowl first which proved to be successful when the score was on 8 runs for 1 wicket after an early breakthrough from Steele who went on to secure stats of 3-43 from 9 overs. Tooke at the other end seized his opportunity of another early wicket by removing Hunter for just 8 runs with an in-swinging good length delivery taking out middle stump. Wickets dried up as a partnership began to develop between Broadley and Marrow until Hasdell managed to tie Broadley in knots and the wicket eventually fell to Hasdell proving himself to be an important factor in slowing down the run rate of the opposition and finishing with figures of 1-15 from 8 overs. The score quickly progressed to 115 when Goole looked in a spot of trouble as Marrow (63 from 99 balls) was free flowing with the bat until Mell’s snicked off Marrow and was well caught behind the wicket by Tooke’s quick reaction. The balance was now in Goole’s favour as the big wicket of the day had fallen and with 15 overs left Goole looked to slow down the run rate further. Wilson and Mell continued Goole’s momentum by taking 1 wicket each in the final spell with Hessle finishing on 160 for 8.
Goole’s run chase started effectively between Richardson and Chappell with a partnership of 16 before Chappell was dismissed early. Hasdell and Richardson then managed to achieved a good partnership of 50 runs in just 8 overs until Richardson had to retire at 41 from 38 balls and Hasdell, 12 runs later, retiring at 32 from 37 balls leaving the score on 80 for 1 after 13 overs. Mell then took to the crease and was joined by Alex Wood, Steele and Tooke but they were all dismissed early and Goole now had an uphill struggle on their hands to try and slow down the momentum of Hessle’s bowlers. Mell and Murphy put on 35 runs taking the score to 120 before Mell was run out for 11. Murphy maturely analysed the situation of the game by rotating the strike well and picking the gaps aided well by Woodcock. They managed to achieve a 22 partnership pushing the score to 142 before Woodcock was dismissed for 7. Murphy continued to score fluently achieving a 44 from 66 balls in 67 minutes at the crucial part of the game which was finally wrapped up when Wilson hit a four down to third man to send the Goole boys into rapture. A brilliant performance by the young prospects who are now full of confidence for their next game this Sunday at home against Gilberdyke.
