After a nightmare August, the 2s did the business at Bishopthorpe on Saturday, but 3s beaten at Zingari

Goole 2nd XI took 26 points from the match at Bishopthorpe to record their highest points total for a number of weeks. After 3 defeats and a rained off match Goole had slipped from first place in the Division Three table to 4th, but an excellent all round team performance gave Goole a slight chance of finishing in 3rd place by the end of the year.

Goole batted first after a rain delay and the match was reduced to 40 overs per team. At 89-2 in the 22nd over, Goole looked well placed for a large total as Will O'Donnell looked well set with Neil Foster and with the power of Louis Sugden and Steve Hicks to come a score over 200 was still on the cards. Unfortunately for Goole 3 wickets in 4 overs left Goole on 103-5 as O'Donnell was bowled by Holmes for 29, Sugden Lbw the very next ball for a duck and Steve Hicks was caught behind again from Holmes for 7. With Neil Foster not out 52 and Simon Franks coming to the crease, big hitting was not always going to be an option for Goole, however excellent running mixed in with some nice shots going for four the pair managed to put together a brilliant partnership of 85 from 77 balls to propel Goole to 195-7 from their allotted 40 overs. Foster was unfortunate to be run out for a fabulous 87 from 113 balls, which included 9 fours and Franks finished unbeaten on 33 from 38 balls. The partnership was key to getting Goole to a good target, which would be hard to chase on a wicket that had some variable bounce and would probably be more difficult to bat on in the second innings.

As it proved Goole's prediction was correct and batting did indeed prove to be more difficult second time around. Bishopthorpe never looked likely to chase the total and they lost wickets regularly. Ryan Thompson and Louis Sugden were the pick of the bowlers ending with figures of 4-43 and 3-23 respectively and Matty Cooper (1-31) and Thomas Marritt (1-17) did the rest to end the innings of Bishopthorpe with the score on 133-9 from their 40 overs.

The two's host 3rd placed Acomb on Saturday in a 3rd vs 4th match that could determine who is promoted for 2019. If Acomb lose and Castleford and Heslington both win, Acomb will be out of the running for promotion so it should be a very good and tight game down at Westfield.

Goole Academy traveled to Hull Zingari on Sunday and were narrowly beaten by 19 runs. Faraz Dar 82 not out and Mohammed Ayub 73, batted well to take Zingari to 216 all out with Ollie Chappell 3-31 and Lewis Wigglesworth 2-17 bowling well for Goole. In reply, Goole batted well but were just short after Eddie Hasdell made 77, Guy Richardson 66 not out and Ollie Chappell 39 to take Goole to 197, but Tom Powdrell took 4-20 as Goole were bowled out with 3 overs spare.
