2 losses, but 2 bonus point in each game.

Louis Sugden

This weekend saw the first team have 2 games on Saturday and Sunday with the first game a home fixture against Brandesburton. Goole lost the toss and were asked to bowl first.
Brandesburton started their innings strongly with an opening stand of 78 before James Kerr on his first appearance for the first team this season making the breakthrough with Kerr finishing with figures of 1-42 from his seven overs. After the first wicket Goole had to work hard to take the next one with the 2nd wicket partnership of 45 taking Brandesburton to 123 before Ben Lamb broke it with his first wicket of the day before going on to take 2-40 off his 13 overs. This then brought about a collapse with Brandesburton’s next 4 wickets falling for 40 more runs scored which started with 2 run outs from stand in keeper & captain Neil Foster, Lamb picking up his second and Dave England picking up the first of his 2 wickets and finishing with figures of 2-24 off his 13 overs again being very economical . Goole then were only able to take 2 more wickets with one falling to England the other to Thomas Marritt who collected one for himself to keep on adding to his impressive wicket tally for the first team over the season with figures of 1-28. Brandesburton finished their innings with a score of 217-8 with their Number 3 batsmen Broumpton finishing the innings on 98 not out.

Goole came out after the interval feeling they could give this chase a good go and as of late started the innings with another opening partnership of 50 between Oscar Sugden and Matthew Cooper but Cooper then was the first to depart after making a well made 24. Then came a mini collapse with the next 2 wickets falling for less than 20 with Sugden the first to depart after making 23 and O’Donnell followed suit. Goole then made steady progress with a partnership of 40 between Neil Foster and Scott Thorpe taking Goole to 113 before Thorpe was the next batter to depart making 22. Following the departure of Thorpe wickets then began to tumble as Goole were eventually bowled out for 165 in pursuit of 218 to win. Goole felt that the game was there for the taking, but none of the batsmen could go on an complete the job. Foster the highest scoring batsmen in the Goole innings with 41.

Roll on 24 hours and Goole travelled to Driffield with changes a plenty to the squad from the game on Saturday. Goole lost the toss and were asked to bowl first with what looked a good wicket to bat on first up. Goole came out to bowl and started the innings well with gaining an early wicket thanks to the excellent spell of bowling from Louis Sugden who claimed the first wicket of the game with Sugden finishing with figures of 1-42 off his 12 overs. After the wickets were then hard to come by for Goole as Driffield batted well with the next wicket falling with the score on 92 with Thomas Marritt picking up the wicket and continuing his good wicket taking form of late. Goole had to work hard for their next wicket as the 3rd wicket partnership put on an impressive 92 before Ben Lamb was able to break the partnership with his first wicket for the day and then in the next over was able to gain the next wicket with taking the wicket of Number 3 Tennant who scored 76 and Lamb would finish his bowling with figures of 2-51 off his 13 overs. Driffield next 3 wickets were to fall to the hands of Mark West on his first appearance for Goole in 8 years finishing with figures of 3-54 and showing how much of an asset he can be to the sqaud. Driffield were to finish their innings with a score of 239-7 off their 50 overs.

Goole came out to bat knowing they were in for a game and knowing that the wicket was good enough that they could have a go of giving the score a good chase. Goole started the innings well with another opening partnership of 75 between Oscar Sugden and Anthony Gibbins. Goole’s first wicket fell with the score on 75 with Gibbins the first to depart with a score of 27 then Scott Thorpe came to the crease and put on another good partnership with Sugden to take the score to 112 before Sugden departed with him making a very impressive 51. This then brought a collapse with the next 5 wickets falling for 32 runs and Goole on 157-7 with a big task on their hands to chase the 240 set by Driffield. Goole inevitably suffered a loss with their innings finishing on 203-8 after 50 overs and there were good contributions in the innings from Thorpe and Lamb with innings of 27 and 25 respectively.

Goole now have a week off due to the wedding of Ben Lamb and we wish him all the best on his wedding day on Saturday. Goole will now take a break and look to bounce back with players retuning and hoping to keep their promotion hopes alive.
