A hard fought match for the 2s but one that ended in defeat

Goole 2s were beaten on their penultimate match of the season at home to Acomb. On winning the toss skipper Antony Gibbins chose to bat and after a 62 run partnership with Simon Franks (25) and a 36 run partnership with Matty Cooper, Goole looked in a strong position to post a challenging total. At 134-1 from 34 overs Goole knew that a strong finish would bring a score above 200, which would prove tricky for Acomb to chase in the second innings. Unfortunately Gibbins was removed by Coulson for 80 and when Will O'Donnell went without scoring, Goole were now on the back foot at 144-3. Steve Hicks joined Matty Cooper and a 34 run partnership got Goole back on track but this was again broken by Coulson, who picked up his third wicket as he bowled Hicks for 27. Coulson picked up his fourth wicket not long after by removing Chappell for 1 and although Goole had wickets in hand, they struggled to break Acomb's shackles. By the end of the innings Goole had progressed to 194-5 with Cooper 32 not out and Ryan Thompson 10 not out with the latter hitting two boundaries in the final over to drag Goole to a reasonable total, but not one that gave them total confidence of a win as the pitch was not giving much assistance for teams wanting to take wickets.

As predicted above, Goole were always going to struggle to take wickets and the Acomb openers of Askham and Tute put on 103 for the first wicket before Tute was bowled for 53 by Gibbins. Goole's bowlers kept things under control, but they could not find the breakthrough and even though Marritt had Hughes caught by Simon Franks for 3, Askham continued to score and as he had been joined by Acomb's big hitter Williams the score continued to move along at a decent rate. Williams (55) hit 7 fours and 2 sixes in a 45 minute innings that took the game away from Goole and even though he was removed by the leg spin of Thomas Franks Askham was still unbeaten and pushing Acomb towards the target. That target was reached not long afterwards with Askham 71 not out and with ten overs to spare giving Acomb the win and the 30 points that keeps them in the fight for promotion to Division Two.

The 2s finish their campaign for 2019 on Saturday with a short trip to Eastrington. Goole should be at full strength for the match and it is hoped that they will finish the year with a win that would cap off a good season which will mean a top 4 finish in Division Three.
