Goole's youngsters off the mark with a win

Goole under 9's took on Doncaster on Sunday the 4th at Westfield. After a good pre-season the youngest of Goole's teams were ready to play and hopes were high for the inexperienced team. Goole gave debuts to Megan McGrath and Thomas Marritt who have both shown promise in training over the Winter.

Goole bowled first with Thomas Franks opening with a tight over conceding only 2 runs. Jenson Clark and Lewis Wigglesworth struggled to make headway and 16 runs came from their overs. Thomas Marritt, Sam Wood, Megan McGrath and Ollie Sugden restored order with tight overs but again the wickets would not come and Doncaster continued to accumulate runs. Ben Cooper was the man for the job and he stepped up and bowled one batsman with his 3rd ball and then claimed another wicket as Goole ran out the other after a mix up after his 5th ball. Franks returned to take a wicket by bowling the batsman and bowling tightly. Jenson Clark and Lewis Wigglesworth restored their pride with two much improved overs second time around and the rest of the team bowled and fielded well to restrict Doncaster to 251.

Goole's reply went well throughout the innings. Cooper and Marritt opened and scored 16 from their overs with some good running between the wickets and excellent communication between them both. Wigglesworth and Sugden took the score on to 240 with some lusty blows to the boundary and all looked good for Goole as they had not lost a wicket at this point. Sam Wood continued to push the score on with a well timed 17 runs and Megan McGrath got over the disappointment of being bowled by playing well and supporting Wood with a well played 5. Franks and Clark finished things off with the best partnership of the match scoring 26.

Goole's final total of 279 was very well received by the spectators and all comments after the game were very positive. Thomas Marritt was named man of the match after an impressive debut with bat, ball and in the field and the rest of the team should give themselves a pat on the back for a very good performance.
