Tail Wags to give Academy the edge

The Academy XI travelled to Patrington knowing that they would encounter a tough side. Goole have always found Patrington a hard place to travel to and positive results are always difficult to get after a long drive to the match. Goole lost the toss and were asked to bat on a reasonable surface which they were happy to bat on even though skipper Ollie Ounsley would have bowled first. Goole got off to a good start pushing the score along nicely as Stephen Thornton, Tom McGrath & Louis Greaves all chipped in with good scores of 30+, Patrington took wickets along the way but as a result of league rules Ollie Ounsley and Jason Greaves were batting in the lower order, which meant that the tail could wag a little. As a result of fifties from both players and a Not Out from Greaves Goole managed to push the score along to 219 from their 40 overs. Ralf Dendle supported Greaves well for the last wicket to ensure that Patrington could not take maximum bowling points, which could prove crucial later in the season.

Patrington’s reply got off to a bad start as Ewan Duffy removed their opener, bowled in the second over for a duck. Their middle order didn’t want to hang around and after 20 overs they’d managed to push the score to 102-3. Goole’s bowlers did well to take a number of wickets, but Patrington looked good to chase down the first innings score. Tight bowling from Goole in the second half of the innings brought about scoreboard pressure and Patrington began to fall behind the rate and lose wickets. As a result they only managed 182-7 from their 40 overs, giving Goole the best part of a winning draw and picking up 26 valuable points. The winning draw pushes Goole up to 5th on 157 points from their opening half of the season with 3 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats. Goole are on the road again on Sunday as they travel to Sutton-on-Hull.
