Giddins & Backhouse rip open 2's top order with opening blast

Goole 2's were well beaten at home on Saturday against York 3's. After winning the toss on what looked like a good batting track & a hot sunny day, Goole elected to bat and were soon in trouble against the York openers. Neil Foster was out early on as he initially looked to leave a ball from Giddins outside his off stump which nipped back and took his off stump for nought. After an initial period of consolidation from Gibbins and Webster York struck again, removing Gibbins for 9 and Webster for 12, both caught behind by Bloor from the bowling of Giddins and Backhouse respectively. Both bowlers were in the act again immediately as they removed O'Donnell for nought and Rodgers for 2, with the score still on 29. At 29-5 Goole had a big problem and although Nat Aitchison and Louis Sugden put on 26 for the sixth wicket it was never enough to set a challenging total for York. Sugden batted very well with Jason Greaves to put on 41 for the seventh wicket and take the score to 96-7, but he could not push on and was caught at point for 39 from the bowling of McFaul. Greaves continued to frustrate York with a belligerent 26 from 60 balls and Simon Franks supported him well in a partnership of 29 from 56 balls. Once Greaves was dismissed, LBW to the spin of Ahmed York quickly wrapped up the innings and Goole were eventually bowled out for 132 in the 37th over.

York in reply looked to be in control as the openers of McIlveen & Hall began to open up against Sam Earle & Louis Sugden, but both Goole's openers hit back and struck in quick succession. Hall was the first to go with the score on 19 as he mis-timed a pull shot from a short delivery from Sugden which was well caught by O'Donnell at mid-wicket. Sugden then bowled a superb yorker to Giddings and he was given out LBW to put York on the back foot at 19-2. Sugden's hat-trick did not materialise, however Sam Earle stepped up to have Hall well caught at point by a diving Anthony Gibbins and at 21-3 Goole were well in the game and were beginning to look favourites for the match. Two half chances to keeper Franks went down with the score on 40. Firstly, he could not cling on whilst diving down the legside from an inside edge from Cleminson and secondly, after a huge edge from Bloor whilst stood up to spinner Aitchison taking the ball towards the vacant first slip area, he again missed the difficult chance. After this York began to take control as Bloor and Cleminson started to look settled and the Goole bowlers struggled to stem the flow of runs. Cleminson looked the most assured scoring at a run a ball to finish his innings 55 not out from 55 balls but Bloor also reached 50 from 76 balls in a partnership of 113 with his partner. Goole's early issues with the bat cost them dearly and they were always 50 or 60 runs short, meaning that York's chase was always going to be relatively easy even though they lost early wickets. They reached their target with fifteen overs to spare and left Goole no chance of saving the match with a last ditch comeback.

The 2's move on to pastures new next Saturday with a trip to divisional leaders Woodhouse Grange and then face Londesborough Park at home on Monday.
