Last game of the season for the third's.

Report by Andy Rodgers

Goole 3rds were entertaining Patrington 3rds in a second consecutive home game. They are just two places above Goole in Y&DSCL Conference Division Three. Could they record another win to make it three in a row? The visitors were only fielding 9 players so they had a great chance.

It was an overcast day but the chance of rainfall was slim according to the weather forecast. Goole won the toss and decided to field. Patrington got off to a flying start with the score reaching 32 after 2.5 overs, and it was wicketkeeper J Duffil who was the main aggressor, but then Thomas Marrit made an early breakthrough taking the wicket of L Sneddon for 1. The score then advanced to 72 with B Butler retiring after a well made 31, before number 5 J McGinty was out for 14 off the bowling of last weeks hero Thomas Franks. 3 more wickets fell soon after and the score was 92-5, but then the visitors were scoring freely at over 7 runs per over for the next 12 overs mostly due to 67 run partnership between L Murrey and opener Duffill. Patrington were finally all out for 190 inside 32 overs. Duffil made 76 from only 50 balls, the returning Butler finished on 33*, and last man L Murray made 23. Thomas Franks took a late flurry of wickets finishing with exceptional figures of 5-51, and Oliver Chappell achieved figures of 23-2.

It wasn’t the best of starts to Goole’s innings as they were soon 30-3. James Steele was out for 4, Alex wood went for 14, and Oliver Chappell departed after making just 8. Something needed to change to turn things around. Fortunately it did as Declan Eastwood and Thomas Franks were involved an a 38 run partnership taking the score to 68 before Eastwood was forced to retire on 30*. Skipper Guy Richardson then supported Franks well before he was dismissed for 11. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals but there were several small partnerships which were edging Goole closer to the target, most of them involving young Franks. Phil Wood who fell for 15 put on 26 with ‘Taf’, before Declan Eastwood resumed his innings. At 149-9, 42 runs were needed from the last wicket stand for victory. This was a difficult task. Unfortunately Franks was out for 36 in the 42 over and Goole were all out for 162 well short of the target. A Ingram was the pick of Patrington’s bowlers taking 3-37, and L Sneddon with 2-32 and J Duffil with 2-10 were the other notable performers.

This was the last game of a difficult season for the 3rds and they finish second from bottom in the division, but all of the regular team members under 16 years of age have performed admirably against much older opposition and should be congratulated. Regular batting collapses have been a contributing factor to some of the losses. Rectify this weakness and a mid-table finish or better could be a realistic target for next year. Onwards and upwards? Something like that.
