Goole 1's hang on for draw as 2nd's slump to defeat

There were a mix of feelings at the end of the match for Goole 1st XI on Saturday as they narrowly missed out on a win, which could also have easily been a defeat. Having won the toss Kev Murphy elected to bowl first and they got off to a perfect start as Guy Richardson ran out Hugill with the score on 6. Wickets proved difficult to take and the next pair of Wilson and Oldfield put on 104 before Wilson was well caught by Ollie Ounsley from the bowling of Lamb for 40. Oldfield followed one ball later as Lamb found the edge of his bat to remove him for 60,caught by Ben Eale behind the stumps and at this point Goole would have hoped that a fightback was on the cards to restrict SHB to a score below 200. Unfortunately SHB had other ideas as Sutcliffe and Bradshaw got stuck into the Goole attack to put on 121 for the 4th wicket inside 15 overs. Sutcliffe (38 from 37 balls) played a supporting role to the destructive Bradshaw who went on to score a 59 ball century including 1 six and 14 fours to take SHB to 257-5 at the end of the innings.

Goole knew that they had a chance of chasing the total down as the wicket was good, Goole's batting line up was in form and the ground at SHB was small, meaning runs shouldn't have been difficult to score. Goole lost Anthony Gibbins early, but Ben Shelton and Ben Earl took them to 48 before Shelton was dismissed for 22. Earl and Ounsley looked assured in their innings and scored at 5 an over to record a fifty partnership which took Goole to 101. At this point Ounsley was controversially run out by Bradshaw for 22 when it looked like he was impeded by the bowler as he tried to take a quick single. Bradshaw managed to run out Ounsley who was just short of his ground, but the Goole batsman was adamant that he would have made his ground had the bowler not impeded his run, but unfortunately the umpires saw nothing wrong with the incident and gave him out. The chaos from that ball may well have affected Goole's innings and immediately after Ben Earl was caught the very next ball for 48, leaving Goole on 101-4 and in trouble even though they had plenty of overs to go in the innings. Goole's middle and lower order had top step up and Declan Eastwood and Murphy did just that by posting 58 for the fifth wicket. Murphy went for 20, Eastwood not long after for 34 and Neil Foster went quickly for 8 to leave Goole on 178-7 still needing 79 from 16 overs. Scott Thorpe (22) and Craig Mainds (21) took Goole to 218 which left the last pair of Guy Richardson and Ben Lamb 6 overs to negotiate to either score 39 for the win or bat out for the draw. A super effort from Lamb (10) and Richardson (13) left Goole just short on 239 for 9 at the end of their innings taking 17 points from the match. The unfortunate run out of Ounsley and the wicket just after of Earl were key moments in the match and Goole will reflect on this and wonder what might have been if they had been able to go on to bigger scores.

Goole 2nd's were well beaten by Hemmingbrough at Westfield on Saturday and will also reflect on what might have been had chances been taken or decisions gone their way. Goole won the toss and elected to bowl, which looked a good decision when Milburn was bowled by Louis Moore for 12. Incoming batsman Matty Clark and the opener Precious then took control and began to attack the Goole bowlers. The fast outfield at the club gave them plenty of value for their shots and they raced along at 5 an over before Goole turned to spin in the form of Dave England and Nat Aitchison. A very close LBW decision from Aitchison on Precious was turned down by the umpire before he reached his fifty and the Goole keeper Simon Franks dropping Clark on 33 as he edged a ball from England were key moments of the match that Goole will look back on with some regret. Clark went on to score an excellent century from 97 balls and Precious scored 80 in a partnership of 176 for the second wicket which took the game away from Goole. Even though Goole fought well in the last 10 overs to eventually bowl out Hemmingbrough for 259, the damage had been done earlier in the day and the final score was always going to be a big ask for Goole. In Goole's innings Neil Webster and Simon Franks went about getting their team off to to a good start. A 72 run partnership inside 15 overs was perfect, but when Franks was adjudged LBW for 29 Goole's troubles began. The next 5 wickets fell for 49 runs and then the final 3 fell for 24, with 4 ducks meaning Goole's last man of Thomas Franks had to support Webster who was still there on 71. Unfortunately the youngster was caught by the keeper Allderidge for nought to leave Goole all out for 145, with Neil Webster carrying his bat in the innings.

Goole 3rds had selection issues and had to concede their match at Welton on Sunday, which was unfortunate, but they hope to go again next weekend as they face Beverley Town at home.

Goole wish to thank its sponsor, White Rose Buildings Ltd for its kind sponsorship for the week and wish it well for the coming year.
