A defeat at home and a Scarborough win leaves 2's facing relegation

A spirited performance from an under-strength 2nd XI was not enough to take the required points against Selby on Saturday that would have seen Goole remain in Division 2 for 2019. At the end of the day Goole's lack of consistency throughout the season has been their downfall and the persistent chopping and changing of teams due to unavailability of players has cost them dear.

Goole lost the toss and were asked to bat by Selby. Declan Eastwood lost Anthony Gibbins early for 8, but Eastwood and Neil Webster scored freely to push the score to 86-1 within 18 overs that should have given Goole the chance to push well past 200 by the end of the innings. Selby fought back to remove Eastwood for a nice 56 from 65 balls and Webster for 21 to leave Goole on 90-3 with N Robinson taking both the wickets. Neil Foster and Guy Richardson came to the crease but they were both restricted by some good bowling and they struggled to push the score on. Richardson was removed by Robinson in the 28th over with the score on 117-4 and the Selby medium pacer took his fourth wicket when Will O'Donnell was caught driving to mid-off for 8. Foster and Andy Rodgers picked up the scoring rate in the last 12 overs to push Goole to 190-5, but the total was a little below par and Goole would look back at the middle overs and ask themselves if they could have done more as 200 was the minimum that that was needed with Goole's limited bowling resources.

During the tea interval Goole learned that Scarborough had bowled out Londesborough Park for 92, meaning that a result in Scarborough's favour was very likely. Goole now knew that a win or a high scoring draw was the only way for them to stay in Division 2 for 2019.

Selby in reply struggled and at the halfway stage of the innings Goole looked favourites. Richardson, Gibbins and young Thomas Franks bowled very well to restrict the scoring and at the 20 over mark Selby needed 140 from 25 overs. Unfortunately the back up bowlers of Foster, Rodger and O'Donnell struggled to keep a lid on the run scoring and although Steward (16), Wild (17) and Leung (28) were dismissed, Warner and captain Hoyle took control. Some big hitting from Warner took the wind from Goole's sails and Selby moved to 165-4 by the 37th over. Warner was dismissed by Foster for 64 from 58 balls to give Goole another bonus point, but Goole simply did not have enough in the tank to pull the rabbit from the hat and Selby easily knocked off the runs with 4 overs to spare.

Scarborough eased to a 7 wicket win against Londesborough which gave them their full 30 points to see them leap frog Goole in the table.

Next season should be seen as a rebuilding exercise for Goole and they must push hard for an early return to Division 2 cricket. The squad has shown signs this year that they can compete at that level, however they must improve on 2018 if they are to do so in coming years.

Goole Town would like to thank all it's sponsors and supporters for the 2018 season and would like to make eveyone aware that the club presentation evening is on Friday 26th October and the AGM will be on the 8th November.
