A fascinating match between Goole Town and Heworth finished with the sides separated by just four runs.

Goole Town 1st's took on struggling Heworth at home on Saturday in what turned out to be a fascinating match which finished with the sides separated by just four runs after a disastrous start from the home team. The Home side began the day by losing the toss and being asked to bat by the Heworth skipper Neil Martin. Goole were immediately on the back foot having a disastrous start to be 8 for 3 from the first 4 overs. Oscar Sugden was caught behind from the first ball of the match from the bowling of Bell, then the 2nd team centurion from last week Declan Eastwood was caught without scoring from Oliver and Ashton Nottingham followed suit two overs later for a single as he was bowled by Bell. Ben Earl and Kevin Murphy steadied the ship to take Goole to 52-4 before Earl was stumped from the spin of Boothroyd for a counterattacking 35 and Scott Thorpe supported Murphy on his way to his half century to leave Goole on 128-5 when Murphy was caught for 51. Thorpe continued to play watchfully to end with 43 from 82 balls and he was well supported by the lower middle order to take Goole to 197-9 from their 48 overs and give Goole a working total which gave them a chance of a win subject to a good bowling performance. Jack Wilkinson took three wickets late on to restrict Goole's recovery however Heworth knew that they had let the home side off the hook and they now had a tricky chase to negotiate for victory.

In reply Goole struck early as Louis Sugden had J Wilkinson caught behind for 9 in the second over. Ben Lamb then Kevin Murphy removed Lawrence and Milner with the score on 59-2 and 74-3 respectively, but with the Heworth skipper Neil Martin being not out on 27 and beginning to look a threat to Goole the odds were still in favour of Heworth coming out on top. Martin and wicket keeper Barrett put on 65 for the fourth wicket to give Heworth even more confidence of the win, but Sugden retuned to break the partnership with the score on 139 and when Wilkinson was caught by Scott Thorpe from Murphy, Heworth were 152-5 and Goole sniffed an unlikely win. Needing what looked a simple 46 from 14 overs Heworth were still favourites, but wickets or tight bowling could still change the match and some good bowling from Goole restricted the scoring as only 23 were scored in the next seven overs. Sugden got his third wicket when Earl stumped Oliver for 14 which allowed Goole to attack the lower order whilst they defended against the not out Martin at the other end restricting his scoring options to singles. The frustration began to grow on the skipper and when Guy Richardson bowled a short delivery to Martin he saw his opportunity to break the shackles, however his attempted pull went all wrong and he skied the ball to Neil Foster, who took a well-judged catch at mid-off to remove the skipper for an excellent 80. Murphy took his third wicket removing Clayes LBW for 7 with 3 overs to go with the score on 189-8 and when Earl got his 3rd dismissal of the innings from Richardson with 3 balls to spare Heworth needed 5 to win. The last pair of Boothroyd and Bell had a conundrum to work out as they knew that the five runs would give them 30 vital points, but another wicket would have given them very few compared to the win or a draw for batting out the overs. Heworth settled for the draw as the final pair played out the last 3 balls from Richardson who ended with figures of 2-29, Louis Sugden 3-50 and Kevin Murphy 3-27 as the Goole bowlers kept the game close all the way through and got home by the skin of their teeth. Kevin Murphy's captain's knock and tight bowling was the balance between the two teams and Goole ended with 26 points and Heworth 18, which leaves Goole in fifth place, still in the fight for promotion and Heworth just above the relegation zone as they overtook Pocklington who lost at home to leaders Sheriff Hutton Bridge.
