Early Promise Evaporates at Yapham

2nd's on a worrying slump of seven games without a win drop into relegation zone after collapse at Yapham.

Having battled well the week before against Pickering there was hope that Goole could get back to winning ways as they travelled to Yapham on Saturday in a game that both teams targeted as a "must win". Goole were asked to bat and got off to a reasonable start as Franks and Gibbins negotiated the initial overs from Flint and Kirby. Franks was the first to go as he edged an out-swinger from Flint to keeper Nattrass for 13, which brought Andy Rodgers to the crease and the next fifteen or so overs went to plan for Goole as they built the total with some stout defence and attacking intent. Gibbins was free-flowing in his run making and progressed well to make 51 from 57 balls as Yapham served up an attack of seam and swing bowling, which suited the veteran Goole opener. Yapham turned to another veteran in the shape of leg spinner Newhouse and immediately they were rewarded for the change as Gibbins mis-timed a drive and was caught by Nattrass off a thick edge. Harry Haines joined Rodgers, but four balls later was on his way back to the pavilion as Rodgers played a ball to backward point, called "yes", then "no" to leave Haines stranded and run out at the non-strikers end for a duck. Aitchison supported Rodgers to move Goole along to 110-4 when Newhouse struck again, bowling Rodgers for 41 and this brought about a collapse on a monumental scale as Steve Hicks, Jason Greaves and then Aitchison all fell cheaply to Newhouse and Axup to leave Goole on 116-7. Goole only managed another nine runs in their innings as Newhouse picked up his best figures ever for Yapham, 6-14 leaving Goole all out for 125 inside 40 overs. This total was well short of the mark and Goole knew that they had their hands full in the second half of the game.

Earl struck in the first over as he found the edge of Flint's bat with a tremendous delivery that lept and left the right hander to present an easy catch for Franks behind the stumps. Franks was in the game two overs later, but this time he failed to hang on to an easy chance from Moore. Earl bowled Brewer for 14 to leave Yapham on 35-2 in the eighth over and when Aitchison saved Franks’ blushes by catching Moore from the bowling of Harry Haines for 20 in the 11th over Goole were well in with a chance of victory. Goole pushed on with renewed confidence as they knew that Yapham could be skittled as Goole had bowled them out for 70 in the return match earlier in the season. A confident partnership of 70 from Yapham skipper Holman (36) and Cattle (31) dented this confidence and although Greaves had Cattle caught behind by Franks this was enough to see them home with over 20 overs to spare.

Goole are now in the relegation zone in Division 2 after Scarborough's win at bottom placed Acomb. They have a tricky trip to York at the weekend to face York 3's and they know that they have to start to improve performances and pick up points if they are to avoid a return to Division 3 next year.

Goole 3's match versus Gilberdyke was conceded by Gilberdyke as they could not raise a team.
