A Tale of Two Ben's as Earl gets Goole over the line with the bat after Lamb masterclass in the field

Goole 1st XI gained a vital win at home on Saturday and leap-frogged their rivals for promotion back to the Premier Division with an excellent team effort from Kevin Murphy's troops.

Having won the toss, Murphy asked the Beverley's skipper Acklam to bat on a cloudy but humid afternoon as it was hoped that this would assist the bowlers early in the innings by producing some swing. Unfortunately the swing didn't materialise as Beverley got off to an aggressive start scoring 19 from the opening 3 overs, with Guy Richardson taking most of the punishment from the Beverley opening pair of Parker and Spence. Despite this the youngster was the first to strike as he removed Spence for 18 as he was well caught by Ben Lamb at mid-on. New batsman Whyley batted well with Parker and took the score to 95 before Lamb got in on the action again taking a nicely judged caught and bowled chance from Parker who fell 5 short of his 50 for 45. The 3rd wicket fell in the 22nd over again to Lamb as he bowled Whyley for 30 and even though Fish & Bowden managed to move the score to 148 in the 32nd over, Goole always had control of the run rate as Lamb and Ollie Ounsley were bowling an excellent line and length to keep things tight. Lamb struck again in the 32nd over as he removed Bowden, LBW for 17, which meant he had been involved in all of the wickets to fall to date and when Murphy took the 5th wicket of Norton with the score on 164 Goole were well on top. Fish had batted well for 36 but in taking 78 balls to get to this score he had taken up a lot of the innings and Beverley were always going to struggle to post a score of 200+. Ollie Ounsley bowled Fish in the 42nd over and then in the 44th had Simpson caught by Craig Mainds for 7 to leave the visitors struggling to 195 from their allotted overs. After an aggressive start by Beverley, Goole took control of the innings with a miserly spell of bowling from Lamb and Ounsley who only conceded 43 runs from 21 overs, which tipped the balance of the match towards the home team.

Goole in reply got off to a good start as Murphy and Shelton scored at 5 an over to put on 40 for the 1st wicket. Shelton was the aggressor scoring a run a ball 22 as Emery struggled with his line and length and going at nearly 7 an over from his early spell. Bowden at the other end was more disciplined and managed to keep things under control and he took the 1st two wickets of Shelton and Murphy, the latter falling for 46 with the score on 117 after a 77 run partnership with Ashton Nottingham. Ounsley perished not long after for 7 to leave Goole on 127-3 and when Nottingham was bowled, 3 short of his 50 by Franklin for 47, Goole still needed an innings from someone to get them to the total of 195 with only 13 overs remaining. Up stepped Ben Earl who has batted very well this year without the reward of a big score to try to get Goole over the line. Earl was the aggressor as he scored 25 of the next 32 runs to be scored and when Craig Mainds was bowled by Parnaby in the 41st over Goole still needed 35 from 8 overs to take the full 30 points from the match. Earl took control hitting 4 fours and a six to score 43 from 40 balls as Goole got home with nearly 3 overs to spare. Scott Thorpe played a supporting role to Earl with 12 not out and Goole went on to win by five wickets.

It was an excellent team performance from the 1sts, which was led in the field by Ben Lamb who was involved in four out of the seven wickets to fall and finished off in style by Ben "The Earl of Barmby" who batted superbly at the end to take Goole to fourth in the Division One table just 15 points behind Knaresborough in second place. Goole play Sewerby at home on Saturday as Knaresborough play leaders Sheriff Hutton Bridge. It's hoped that Bridge can do Goole a favour and win, which will give Goole the chance to get into the promotion places for the first time this season.
