Town second XI take vital points in league and then win the Frank Piercy Cup after a bowl off in Jason's final game.

Goole 2’s went into Saturday’s league match with Acomb knowing that a win and 30 points was the only result that was acceptable after last week’s loss at home to fellow strugglers, but resurgent Scarborough. Goole lost the toss and Acomb batted first. Having removed opener Hughes for 11 and number three Darley for 3 Goole were on top in the early exchanges with Craig Mainds and Matty Cooper snagging the two early wickets as Acomb slumped to 34-2 from 10 overs. The next 10 were firmly Acomb’s as Ingle and Williams hit 80 in a partnership lasting only 12 overs, but one which could have proved critical had Anthony Gibbins not removed Ingle for 54. 114-3 turned to 128-5 as Louis Greaves bowled Williams for 44 and then had Williamson caught by Matty Cooper for 3. The last 15 overs belonged to Goole as they bowled tightly and fielded well to restrict Acomb to 184-7 with Gibbins, Cooper and Greaves all taking 2 wickets and bowling very well to restrict Acomb to a below par score on a nice pitch for batting. In reply, Goole sailed home as Anthony Gibbins and Declan Eatwood smashed Acomb’s wayward bowlers to all parts of the ground. Gibbins hit 80 from 53 balls with 17 fours and Eastwood 44 from 63 in a 113 run partnership that took Goole well on the way to victory. Gibbins was run out for 80 and Eastwood caught for 44 and even though Cooper departed early for 6, Craig Mainds (21no) and Neil Foster (19no) saw Goole home by 7 wickets within 27 overs. With Scarborough gaining 27 points at Stamford Bridge the win was even more vital for Goole to keep them in touch of the seasiders, but after Pickering were well beaten by Yapham, Pickering are now Goole’s target as they are now only 10 points above the 2’s.

On Sunday the 2’s travelled to play the semi and then hopefully the final of the Frank Piercy Cup at Sheriff Hutton Bridge CC. Goole’s opponents in the semi final were Pickering and an excellent batting display took Goole to 134-4 from 20 overs. In reply Pickering never looked like getting near to the target and were eventually pegged back to 110-7 after their 20 overs. Goole moved on to the final to play Acomb in a repeat of the match from Saturday. Goole started very well with Anthony Gibbins continuing where he left off 24 hours earlier to smash Goole to 65-2 from 7 overs with Gibbins 48 not out. Unfortunately from there on the weather intervened and heavy rain forced the players from the field. As there was little prospect of a resumption due to a waterlogged pitch a bowl off was required, which meant five players had to bowl at the stumps and the team with the most wickets won the trophy. Goole happily finished winners by 3 wickets to 2 and took the trophy for their first time in their history. It was fitting that Goole’s captain, Jason Greaves lifted the trophy as he earlier announced that he was stepping down as the 2nd XI captain as well as a player at the club to allow him to concentrate on managing Goole Utd Football Club that begin their season next weekend. Goole Town Cricket Club would like to thank Jason for his efforts over the years and wish him well in his future sporting exploits with Goole Utd. The cricket club would not be where it is now if it wasn’t for “Gripper” and we will all be sad that he will not be alongside us on a Saturday in the summer but wish him well for the future.
